Writing prompt: The drowned book

Who wrote this book? What's it about? Who owned it? When / how / where did they get it? What did it mean to them? And why is it in the canal? (Does it stay there?)

Try spinning this through different genres; imagine possibilities for each. What if the story's a thriller? A detective story? Literary fiction? Magical realism? Fantasy? Sci-fi? A romance?
