12 days of writing: place

This Christmas, sneak off for twenty minutes to half an hour each day for some lovely, restful creative play with the 12 Days of Writing. If you've just joined in, start your story here. Each day, you get a new prompt to develop it further. (Subscribe to the blog on the top right to get it emailed to you.)

Place: locations

Flip back through what you have so far and pick 3 events / scenes.

Grab those old magazines or newspaper supplements again, and choose a great location for each scene. Look for resonance, contrast, and drama, not just beauty – something unusual, but not ridiculous. Also think about the potential for action: can the characters do more than sit / stand / sip? (Pubs, cafes, bars, restaurants, and living rooms are all pretty limited for action!) Tear them out and glue each one onto one side of a double-spread in your notebook.

On the page opposite the picture, write what happens in each location. Jot down events or write it as a scene, however you prefer. Give yourself about 5 mins for each location.

Tomorrow we'll play with Time. If you want to share what you invent, tweet me @WritersGreenHse. I'd love to hear.

For more on exploring and enriching stories, you can download the Story Elements: The Complete Set - only available until the end of 30 December 2014. Find out more, see previews, and download it here.
